Tresanton is one of the West Country's most famous hotels, situated at the edge of the unspoiled village of St. Mawes. All rooms have stunning views across the sea and look towards St. Anthony's lighthouse. Originally created in the 1940s as a yachtsmen's club, Tresanton is a cluster of old houses on different levels; in the 1950s and 60s it became one of the best-known and best-loved hotels in Cornwall. In 1997 Olga Polizzi bought Tresanton and spent two years completely redesigning and restoring it. It has a casual and elegant atmosphere very much in keeping with its seaside location. The hotel is perfect as a romantic wedding venue, relaxing holiday location or luxury business and conference centre. 'If there is any more elegant hotel in Britain than Olga Polizzi's Tresanton on the Cornish Coast, then I have never been there' The Independent Conference and Banqueting Facilities Tresanton offers a unique atmosphere and opportunity with one large room available for special conferences, board meetings and away days. Buffet or sit down lunches are available. Use of Tresanton's Yacht, Pinuccia, can be included.

    Lewtrenchard Manor

    Lewtrenchard Manor

    Lewdown, Near Okehampton,, EX20 4PN
    • Hotel

A Jacobean Manor tucked away in its own secret valley. Hidden away in a wooded hollow just beneath the wild tors of Dartmoor, Lewtrenchard is a house virtually untouched by time. The original manor was mentioned in the Domesday Book, but today’s impressive Jacobean dwelling, set in its own shrub filled gardens and surrounded by peaceful parkland, dates from the early 1600’s. Over the years it was home to a series of colourful characters; James Gould, one the earliest adventurers to trade on the Chinese mainland, Edward Gould the compulsive gambler and suspected murderer, and the Reverend Sabine Baring Gould, celebrated hymn writer and novelist who composed “Onward Christian Soldiers” at the desk that still stands in the Library. This house, steeped in history, is large enough to be imposing, yet not so grand as to be unwelcoming. Stepping over the ancient slate floor in the impressive hallway one immediately feels very much at home. Each of the historic bedrooms has its own unique character, whether it be burnished oak panelling, exquisite ornamental plasterwork, rich fabrics, extraordinary antique furniture or superb views over the garden and parkland – in one you’ll even find the original bed of Henrietta Maria, wife of the hapless Charles I. The gardens and grounds at Lewtrenchard really are a sight to behold, the elevated setting of the house providing splendid views over them and the peaceful parkland beyond. Extending over several acres, the glorious gardens feature streams and ponds, fountains and statuary, sunken lawns and a profusion of shrubs, plus a huge rustic dovecote and a recently restored walled vegetable garden, where the chefs often gather fresh produce for their menus. At Lewtrenchard Manor, you can be assured of privacy and tranquillity, no distractions, and an environment that divests you of all the everyday pressures, leaving you to talk and think in peace. Beautifully secluded but only a few miles from the main A30 trunk road into Cornwall, Lewtrenchard Manor is in the most perfect setting for small meetings and conferences.
